TRIVIA QUESTION: Andrew Doheny won the Open Boys, Explorer Boys and Explorer Menehuene divisions at the 2005 West Coast Championships. Which NSSA surfer captured those same titles at the 1995 Nationals?
SURF CITY RULES!: Heaven smiled down on the NSSA West Coast Championships again and delivered world class, yes WORLD CLASS surf conditions to
EIGHT IS ENOUGH: The West Coast Championships was no party for Kilian Garland. This was strictly business for the buildup into the Nationals. The 18 year old Central Cal shredder showed no signs of vulnerability blazing to triumph in the power packed Open Mens final featuring Tanner Gudauskas, Nick Rozsa, Cory Arrambide, Marty Weinstein and Kellen Ellison. The victory was Kilian’s eighth which ties him on the all time Regional Championship record with East Coaster Eric Taylor. Kilian has made championship success look natural and his runaway victory in the Open Men’s final taking a 16.33-12.50 win over runner up Tanner Gudauskas was as dynamic as they get. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Cory Arrambide braced for a long list of challengers eager to take another crack at him in the Juniors division but it was no dice. Cory competed in three divisions to stay in tune and the consistency showed. He was floating big sections and hammering every piece of lip that HB would pitch his way. Cory took the Open Juniors victory in a hard fought heat with Jeff Lukasik. Jeff really hit his stride at this event winning every round leading up to the final. Cory also placed third in the Open Men’s final and second in Explorer Mens. As for the 14 and under divisions, it was simply an all-you-can-eat buffet and supergrom Andrew Doheny brought his appetite. Andrew put on a blazing show day after day, heat after heat and came away with three titles-Open Boys, Explorer Boys and Explorer Menehuene. HB was bombing and Andrew was digging on it surfing extremely well and even ripping a perfect 10 score in the Open Boys quarterfinals. Volcom’s

Andrew wasn’t the only surfer to knock down a trifecta. Women’s surfing fans finally caught a glimpse of the real Sage Erickson. With talent that has been flowing in the Gold Coast but bottled up in the Southwest, Sage finally cracked the lid wide open taking command of all three female categories. Sage got in the groove early on in the Explorer Women’s division which kicked off the first day of competition and just kept her adrenalin going sewing up triple crowns in Open Womens, Explorer Womens and Explorer Girls. In the Mini Grom division, Kolohe Andino dominates with critical and polished maneuvers that make you wonder if he is really only 11 years old. The energy was electric in the lineup of the Mini Grom final which featured Kolohe, John Elles, Chase Kane, Taylor Clark, Tommy Wehsener and Parker Coffin who were all charging the assortment of head high plus peaks. You could hear the oohs and aahs and amazement from the crowd: "I can’t believe these kids are only 10 years old!” Kolohe clinched his second consecutive title in the Mini Grom division and also placed third in Open Boys and second in Explorer Menehuene. He also put up the highest heat totals of all the West Coast Championships finals with a 17.67 score in the Mini Grom division. In the Longboard division Christian Wach put on an absolutely astonishing display nearly comboing the scores of all of his rivals.
BIG TEN CLUB:
Two perfect 10 waves were ridden during the championships.
Nick Rozsa - perfect 10.0 score in the Explorer Mens semis.
Andrew Doheny - perfect 10.0 score in the Open Boys quarterfinals.
TRIVIA ANSWER: 12 year old Bobby Martinez claimed the National Open Boys, National Explorer Boys and National Explorer Menehuene titles in one of the best ever performances witnessed at the NSSA Nationals. For all you Bobby fans out there, this kid blew minds at Lowers that year and he is still blowing minds today. Go Bobby on the WQS!
