(Huntington Beach, Ca)  The NSSA National Office is pleased to announce the establishment of the Mid Atlantic Conference which begins operations in the 2008-09 season.  The conference will offer an Open and Explorer competition schedule with events running in South and North Carolina.  The season opener is scheduled for August 16-17 in Emerald Isle, NC.  The Mid Atlantic Conference will serve as one of the NSSA’s nine conferences nationwide providing youth surfing events for surfers of all ages and abilities.

The Mid Atlantic Conference will be administered by conference director Anthony French with the conference office located in New Bern, North Carolina.  “Over the last 10 years the Mid Atlantic area has grown tremendously with competitive surfers and soul surfers alike,” French said.  “The NSSA Mid Atlantic Conference will give area surfers the opportunity to compete in regular season events and enhance competitive skills.  Our surfers will also have the ability to qualify for slots to the NSSA East Coast and National Championships which in turn will give them more exposure to the industry and media.  In addition, we are hoping to include an interscholastic team season as the conference develops so it is my goal to encourage schools to develop surf clubs and teams in the region.”

“The NSSA is extremely excited and proud to add the Mid Atlantic Conference to our nationwide youth surfing program,” said Janice Aragon, NSSA Executive Director.  “Our director, Anthony French has shown a true commitment to the NSSA ideals of offering high caliber, organized surfing events while encouraging members to develop and pursue excellence in both surfing and academics.  We are especially pleased that bringing in the new conference will provide growth of our sport and competitive opportunities for so many more young surfers in this section of the country.”

The NSSA is committed to operating quality, structured events while also supporting the academic achievement of its members.  All members of NSSA are required to be students maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA or have graduated with a high school diploma or equivalent.
