The waves were Andy's canvas. His confidence, flow and power were unmatched. He won every heat. Andy ripped Lowers to pieces scoring 10 total heat victories. Andy earned multiple perfect 10-point wave scores that week. He posted more perfect 10's than anyone up to that time in NSSA Nationals history. Andy put on a show that week that pushed youth surfing to a new level. Andy's pro class caliber moves earned him the Open Men's title and his second consecutive Explorer Juniors crown. That week, Andy Irons proved he had what it takes to be the best in the world. In 1997 he qualified for the ASP World Tour and was crowned ASP World Champion in 2002, a title he held for three consecutive years.
