NATIONAL INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS: For the second year in a row, San Clemente High School took command of the National Interscholastics with a weighty 151-103 decision over 17 time National Champion Huntington Beach. And how much depth does San Clemente own? A dead giveaway is their "B" team took third place honors. Coming up big for San Clemente was Patrick Gudauskas who won all of his preliminary rounds while placing third in the final. San Clemente "B" teamer Jason Miller is sure to get a promotion next year as he also took first places in every preliminary round and was runner-up in the High School Men's final. The State of Florida finally made noise at the Interscholastics when New Smyrna Beach claimed fourth place. New Smyrna also clinched two National titlists-Jeremy Johnston in the High School Men's and Todd Kinsey in the High School Longboard. Watch out San Clemente! I'll give you Vegas odds that New Smyrna will come storming back next year. Another breaking story at the Interscholastics was the revamped UCSD surf team who after a couple years of drooping spirits, came back to take their first National title since 1997. 2003 NSSA Captains of the Year Aaron Napier and Clinton Edwards deserve mega credit for UCSD's success. Three UCSD surfers Zach Plopper, Gustavo Reategui and Chris Melton made the Men's final and team members Loryn Wilson and Nick Statom won the Women's and Bodyboard titles respectively. Sam Baugh claimed his second consecutive National title in the Collegiate Men's division for USD. For their first time ever, Bernice Ayer Middle School of San Clemente prevailed in a 114-74 romp over Cabrillo Middle School of Ventura. Shorecliffs Middle School, who has dominated the Interscholastics the past couple of years, took third. Cory Arrambide of Cabrillo captured his first National title in the Middle School Boys division. Ryan Burch of Oak Crest Middle School may have taken fourth in the Boys final but it was a different ballgame in his earlier round two heat when he ripped a Salt Creek beauty earning both the highest scoring wave-a 9.5 and the highest scoring point totals-a 16.75, of the entire National Interscholastic Championships!

NATIONAL AIR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Brett Simpson opened up the National Air Championships sticking a frontside grab 360 earning an 8.0-the best score of the airshow championships. Pat Gudauskas narrowly missed pulling off "the Gorkin Flip" in the first round but it was still breathtaking to see him pushing it to new heights. However it was the Hawaiian from Hana, Ola Eleogram who was flying all over the place with his effortless double rail grabs in the final while landing his first National title. Ola also grabbed a cool $4,000.00 scholarship for his high flying antics!

DAY THREE THROUGH SEVEN-NSSA NATIONAL OPEN AND EXPLORER CHAMPIONSHIPS; CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS GOVERNOR'S CUP CHAMPIONSHIPS JUNE 24-28
SURF CONDITIONS-ANYWHERE FROM CHEST HIGH TO OVERHEAD AND RANGING FROM SUPER FUN TO LOWERS PERFECTION.
PERFORMERS-THE NATION'S BEST.

THE NATIONAL OPEN MENS AND GOVERNOR'S CUP FINAL: Goes down in history as one of the most talent-loaded high performance displays in the NSSA's twenty-five year history. The six finalists-defending National Champion Dustin Cuizon who earlier clinched his sixth career title in the Explorer Juniors division; 2002 National runner-up and teenage phenom Dane Reynolds; three time National Champion Pat Gudauskas; Southwest Open Men's Champion Andrew Gahan who earlier captured his second career National title in the Explorer Men's; Kekoa Bacalso, who the day before turned up the heat earning the high scoring point totals of the Men's quarterfinals; Nathan Carroll came to Lowers on a mission to take it all, no matter what. Unlike last year with the Cuizon-Reynolds seesaw battle, this year it was the exhilarating Gudauskas-Reynolds back and forth exchanges that were rousing the crowd. Dane opened up with the first excellent wave of the final-a string of dynamic snaps that scored an 8.0. Pat then answered back with what was to be the exclamation point of the entire 35 minute final-a screaming ride that began out the back with a huge full rotation snap, floater, two more vertical, tail-blasting lippers and for the grand finale a double grab 180 air to reverse. The beach erupted and so did the score coming through as a 9.25 giving Pat the lead. Pat then blew the lid off another wave earning a 7.5. That left Dane needing an 8.26 to move to first with ten minutes left. He went for an inside right, pulled off two blasting lippers and a relatively small but technically perfect air scoring an 8.0. Doggone-not enough! With time ticking down on the clock, Dane made one last ditch effort to take that elusive National title. He stroked into one of the smaller left-handers and did all the wave would allow-three turns to an air reverse but like the wave, the score came in on the short side, a 7.5 and for the second straight year it was close but no cigar. Patrick Gudauskas takes home the 2003 National Open Men's, the Governor's Trophy, a surfboard from the reigning world champion and a brand spankin' new 2004 Scion compliments of Hurley International and South Bay Scion.

WORLD CHAMPION ANDY IRONS PASSES THE BOARD TO THE MENS CHAMPION.
In the spirit of the 25th annual NSSA Nationals, 1996 National Open Men's Champion and 2002 ASP World Champion Andy Irons passed on an authentic surfboard to the National Open Men's Champion Pat Gudauskas.

AN ELITE CLUB: Only five surfers in the NSSA's 25-year history have won titles in both the National Open Mens and National Open Juniors divisions. Those surfers are Chris Frohoff, Kalani Robb, Michael Losness, Dustin Cuizon and now Patrick Gudauskas.

THE NATIONAL OPEN WOMENS AND GOVERNOR'S CUP FINALS: A literal battle detonated in the Women's final with five girls going after girl number six Karina Petroni, the defending champion. Karina got called on a blatant paddling interference early on spoiling any chance for her to repeat. Anastasia Ashley, who earlier came out on top in the Explorer Women's final, suffered the same fate as Karina, with not one but two interference calls. However in the big picture, all the interferences were inconsequential as Erica Hosseini stepped it up after a disappointing loss in the Explorer semis. Erica took control of Lowers peak racking up two high scoring 7.5 waves to claim her first National title and the Governor's Cup.

KILIAN KILLS IT-BETTER RECOGNIZE!: A six-pack of talent featuring multi NSSA titlist Kilian Garland, Lowers killer Kellen Ellison and big brother Kai, east coast ripper Eric Geiselman and local boy Dane Ward. After an uncharacteristic bow out in Explorer Juniors round one, Kilian was determined to set the record straight. Already the owner of three previous titles, Kilian showed 'em whose boss at the Nationals. Two waves scoring a 7.75 and 6.00 gave Kilian the Juniors victory and his fourth Nationals' crown.

THE OPEN BOYS, MENEHUENES AND GROMS: If only for a few minutes, 13-year-old Granger Larsen stole the show from the sizzling hot Open Men's action, with a dazzling performance in his Open Boys round one heat. Granger blew up on two waves-one scoring a flawless 10.0 and the other an almost perfect 9.0. His total heat score of 19.0 was the highest of the entire 2003 National Championship earning him the "Kalani Robb Most Inspirational Performance" award. Granger was presented with an authentic Kalani Robb surfboard for his efforts. He backed up his round one accomplishment with a huge victory in the Open Boys despite only catching two waves. That's all Granger needed as his two wave scores came in at an excellent 9.0 and 7.0, for a 16.0 total. 12-year-old Tyler Newton took second to Granger in the Boys, but he retaliated in the Menehuenes taking his first Nationals win and for icing on the cake was presented with an authentic Rob Machado surfboard presented by the man himself at the National Awards Banquet. We knew it was only a matter of time: after a couple years of trying, the 10-year-old pint sized wonder John John Florence finally claimed his first title winning the Mini-Grom division.

OPEN LONGBOARD: H.B.'s Justin Hugron claimed the first ever National Longboard crown in the Open division in a close decision over 2003 NSSA Eastern Champion Tony Silvagni. A longboard division was added to the prestigious Open Season this year to give this sport the recognition it deserves. This was Justin's second National title (he won the National High School Longboard division for Edison last year).

NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS TOP DOG WAVE STATS:
**GRANGER LARSEN AND BRETT SIMPSON-Tie for high scoring wave of the 2003 National Championships-a perfect 10.0 wave score in Open Boys round one for Granger; a perfect 10.0 wave score in Open Mens round one for Brett.

ERICA HOSSEINI-High scoring point total of the National Open Women's division-15.00 two-wave point total in the Open Women's final

DOWNTOWN CASEY BROWN-High scoring point totals of the National Open Juniors division-15.00 two-wave point total in Open Juniors round one.

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOCKER: Top contender Brett Simpson's early exit in Open Men's round two after nailing a perfect 10.0 score in Men's round one. Confucius say...he, who does not practice in Explorer, make big boo-boo.

BEST QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "I swear, it's the best contest in the world. Everyone sticks around all day because the surfing's so good." ASP WCT professional Pat O'Connell on the extraordinary and tremendous atmosphere at the Nationals.

AN EIGHT DAY MARATHON: Over 800 competitors, 15 high school teams, 11 college teams, 9 middle school teams and 284 heats combined at both Salt Creek and Lower Trestles plus close to 600 kids, parents, industry leaders strong at the 2003 National Awards Banquet.

MOST MEANINGFUL APPEARANCE: The NSSA was graced with the presence of three of its original founders Chuck Allen, Tom Gibbons and Rob Hill at the 2003 National Awards Banquet. We wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for theirs and the late John Rothrock's vision. Our founder's concept of building a bridge between surfing and school brought the NSSA to life and the sport of surfing to a new level. Thanks to our founders for paving the way!
